To develop a robust and well-integrated General Education competencies, faculty used two frameworks: Degree Qualifications Profile (DQP) and the Association of American Colleges & Universities Liberal Education and America’s Promise (AAC&U LEAP) Essential Learning Outcomes. Five research sources were used for the Major and Emphases competencies: Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Information Network (O*NET), California Employment Development Department, Burning Glass, and industry-recognized certifications.

Using backward design faculty identified the final assessments and supporting learning objectives. Using the competency framework, they constructed learning activities and content to support mastery of the final assessment. To ensure alignment with workforce needs, competencies and respective final assessments are vetted through the University’s advisory board and employer partners via structured interviews and surveys.
